The investigation game of the SPOC “information society and digital media”
This is the scenario of the investigation game developed by Aptilink and the library teams ofUniversité Paris-Saclay.
Through this rather unusual course, first-year students from every discipline learn to spot, decode and correctly reference information. Armed with those skills, they gain the tools to face disinformation and information overload, and to avoid plagiarism.
This SPOC (Small Private Online Course) was built on three pillars:SPOC (Small Private Online Course) a été développé sur trois piliers :
An institution-wide approach:
this course, led by the Paris-Saclay Undergraduate School, fits into an existing landscape of blended programmes, strengthening students’ cross-cutting skills and supporting both academic success and openness to the world.
A playful scenario and interactive modules:
built around key characters and a different investigation each session, the humorous scenario offers varied learning activities to engage with and take ownership of a methodology and its tools, making the student an active participant. A badge is awarded for each completed session, strengthening motivation and the gamified feel of the project.
A variety of contexts of use:
The SPOC was conceived as a coherent whole of 15 hours of student work. Each session can nonetheless be taken independently of the others.
This project was co-designed by the Aptilink teams and those of the Université Paris-Saclay library network. Working this way built the skills of the Paris-Saclay teams, opening the way to similar projects within the University in future.
The teams learned in particular to:
- write a learning and game scenario for an elearning module,
- develop a storyboard,
- write a script for a video or a podcast,
- use some of Moodle’s advanced features: quizzes, video, activity completion tracking, badges, certificates, SCORM packages and so on
- get to know Storyline.
For its first release, and with a full rollout in preparation, the SPOC was tested by around 200 students, who enjoyed the fun designs, the offbeat scenario and the varied activities. They liked being able to put what they had learned straight into practice during the investigations! The teams can’t wait to carry on and extend this original project!
The project is part of the HYbrider, Construire et Accompagner la REussite (HYCARE) programme, from the“Hybridisation of training”call for projects, funded by the French Programme d’investissements d’avenir.
